It has been 2 weeks since my last post and I certainly didn’t like staying away for so long, but there are just too many things going on. Between working on projects, learning new things, trying to practice daily if possible and visiting the real world once in a while my blog has been left behind… With a long awaited vacation coming up next week there’s so much to do before I leave, but I’ve decided to make a small update on what I’ve been up to, before I disappear again for another 2 weeks to enjoy the sun down in Barcelona!
When I have some free time and the weather is … well… less rainy I like sketching at the Botanical garden. I love plants and flowers and beautifully arranged gardens, so the inspiration there is just endless.
I haven’t done any art shopping in ages, so I got few little things quite spontaneously, following a spur of inspiration. I got a new A5 watercolor sketchbook, even though I am only halfway through my current sketchbook, but this one was quite the steal and with much better paper. Next was a flat watercolor brush, which I’ve been wanting to try for a very long time and I’m quite enjoying it so far. Last, but not least a bunch of new pigment ink pens to try as I feel the ones I have will be dead soon. These are Uni Pin, a brand I’ve never tried, but the price was good, so I decided to check them out and they are great so far!
Of course I had to try my new goodies as soon as they arrived, so I decided to draw something using only my new supplies and my watercolors. I’m not so happy with my drawing, but it wasn’t the art supplies’ fault, they were lovely! It’s just me being all rusty on paper.
So I decided to make time every day for some practice and for the most part has been able to keep to it, but I’ll need to do it much more to turn it into the habit I want to build.
I’ve also been worried about how inconsistent my style can be- one day I draw semi-realistic-or-something ladies, next day I revert to some super simplified cartoonish style, which I mostly use in my digital vector work, but to be fair the same inconsistencies happen all the time in my digital work as well. I just really enjoy both styles and feel like they both have their time and place and as much as I’d like to chose one and stick with it, it’s really hard!
Some days my drawing practice actually turned into brush pen calligraphy practice for a t-shirt piece. I have a dance lettering project in mind, so I was doodling ideas for it, but that would need much more practice before it gets where I want it to be.
I’ve also downloaded a timelapse app, because I wanted to record some sketching process. As I am trying to squeeze some video editing learning in my free time, so I need some footage to play with. This Botanical garden sketch was the first to be timelapsed and it was quite fun to do, so there might be some drawing videos coming out of it in August! Nothing compares to the thrill, challenge and frustration of learning a new skill!
I’ve been also taking long walks whenever possible and trying to capture the little treasures I encounter on those walks!
All in all, there’s been lot’s of work and lot’s of play going on. The work I am not yet able to share, but it’s been so so exciting and I can’t wait to do much more of all these wonderful things!
